My Venture Into My Characters

Hi, All:

Last night(which was the 25th of October, 2007), my local library held their authors day event.

Unfortunately, we were competing against the Boston Red Sox and the World Series. As a result there were less than twenty people at the event. When it was my turn to get up and speak about my books I thought I'd do something different than telling the audience all about me. I explained to them that rather than talking about my books I would like to introduce them to my characters.

At first, I don't think they understood what I was going to do until my characters starting telling them who they were and how they came to be. Since we were limited to the amount of time we had, I could only introduce the characters from the Legacy Series. It went over big. I received a huge applause and people came over to me after and thought it was a marvelous idea, and they were interested in learning more about the characters and the books. I only sold a few copies, but people did take my flyers and then rushed off to get home to see the ballgame. After all this is RedSox Nation. Can't compete against that.

This sounds like a "novel" (ha ha) approach to a book reading Elena. Did you introduce the characters in first person, (ie did you embody them) or as third person? If you have time, I'd love to see a sample introduction :-)

I really like this idea of introducing the audience to your characters. Brilliant! And, around 20 folks at a talk seems pretty good to me. I shake up my talks by adding music. I think audiences appreciate anything you do to reach out and include them more fully.

Elena: What a neat way to liven up a book presentation. Introduce the characters! All we authors know that library presentations, book signings at bookstores, etc. can be terribly dull. It is up to us to entertain at them as surely as it is with our books. BTW, there is an entire chapter on livening up these events in my The Frugal Book Promoter! (-:

One thing my book publicist did when looking for a date to have my book signing was check every event calendar in the city to make sure there was no competition that evening. We forgot to check the TV line up that night. Thanks for sharing this insight with us, Elena. Great to have you on this week's blog chain.

What a fantastic idea by introducing the audience to your characters. I think I would have enjoyed hearing you speak. Too bad I didn't live near by! And I'm not a Red Sox fan so I would have even stayed a while longer. Giggle!

Hi Elena,
I know the video thing can be frustrating but I simply place them on youtube and embed the cod into my post and that should work on blogger. Your blog is rich and I like your intriguing book covers! Did you design them? You're a very prolific writer! They all sound so interesting. I'd love to see the videos, so please don't give up! Blessings!

Hi Pal,
Just dropping by on Yvonne's blog chain and wanted to say hi! It's not like we don't exchange messages on a permanent basis at The Readers' Station. *lol*

Like your site...it's crisp, comfortable and easy on the eyes. Good Job!

HI, Everyone!

Thank you all for your comments. Anita, I intorduced my characters in third person. It was in first person when I decided to have them introduce themselves.

Steven, my son designs all my book covers. I may make a suggestion, but that doesn't necessarily say that's the way it will come out. I have added the urls to my signature in the hope that the videos will be easily accessible to anyone who wants to see them.
